MAHMUD BACHIR AL WALI INTERCULTURAL CENTER
The routine, the impossibility of access to employment, the absence of leisure activities, the blockage to personal development and the present situation of vulnerability, conform the current reality of the Saharawi refugee population. All this is aggravated in Dakhla camp, due to the distance from the city of Tindouf, and the bad communication with the rest of the camps.
The Mahmud Bachir al Wali Intercultural Center is a space created for leisure and culture on a continuous basis. Within the field of non-formal education, it has three lines of action: socio-cultural animation, education in free time and training.
It is managed in coordination with the competent part in the camps: the Ministry of Culture; and with a team of five Saharawi professionals with extensive experience in the field, and previously formed by the team of UGDA-Sahara, in intervention with groups through artistic tools.
Leaving aside the idea of a return project to become permanent and independent in time, we gave life to the Mahmud Bachir al Wali Intercultural Center. Through the donation of a space in disuse by the Ministry of Culture, we started the rehabilitation of the space, coordination and management of it.
This phase was implemented during the months of April and May 2017. Since then and until today, the center remains open and active throughout the year, providing training and cultural and artistic activities organized by the Saharawi people.
